Installation of the Probe

Using the documents pertaining to the magnet whose field is to be measured, estimate the value of the field. Make sure that this field is in the probe's measurement range.

On one end of the probe box there is a (+) to show where the resonant material is located (image1-Gif, 18kB). Place this end of the probe into the gap of the electromagnet to be measured in such way that the magnetic field is perpendicular to the electrical axis of the probe. Be careful to electrically isolate and to firmly secure the probe.

Simply tape the top side of the probe (perpendicular to the z-axis, see NMR Probes) to the magnet pole, while making sure that the (+) is located at approximately the center of the pole.

In addition, prevent that part of the probe cable which is located in the magnetic field from moving.

Installation of the Pre Amplifier

If possible, attach the pre amplifier to the magnet. Electrically isolate the pre amplifier from the ground. Connect the probe cable to one side of the pre amplifier and the cable to the gaussmeter on the other side (image2-Gif, 18kB).

Installation of the Gaussmeter

on the front panel:

  • Set the ON/OFF switch to OFF position ( On the portable model, the ON/OFF switch is on the rear panel image3-Gif, 25kB).

on the back panel:

  • Set the power supply voltage switch to the appropriate voltage level (120, 220, 240 Volt).
  • Connect the cable to the pre amplifier.
  • (Caution: It is important, that the connection between the cable and the gaussmeter is properly made. A bad connection can generate noise which will adversely affect readings. Also avoid making measurements close to wires which carry a lot of current or contain much noise.)
  • Connect the line cord to the gaussmeter.
