In certain cases, where the magnetic field lacks uniformity, a manual measurement must be made.

Starting the Gaussmeter

  1. Turn the ON/OFF switch to ON. The display should now be lit.
  2. Flip the MANU/AUTO switch to its high position - MANU.
  3. Turn the SIGNAL and SWEEP controls to the values listed in the probe's documentation.
  4. Turn the SYNCHRO control to its mid range position.
  5. Turn the probe selection dial to the number of the probe used.

Connecting to an Oscilloscope

Attach the SIGNAL port of the gaussmeter to SIGNAL port of an oscilloscope. Set the vertical sensitivity of the oscilloscope to 5 volt/cm.

Attach the SYNCHRO port of the gaussmeter to the EXTERNAL TRIGGER port of the oscilloscope. Switch the TRIGGER setting of the oscilloscope to EXTERNAL. Set the sweep rate of the oscilloscope to 20 milliSeconds.

Searching the Resonance Signal

Use the MANUAL ADJUSTMENT controls to find the resonance signal:
Slowly turn this control starting from the zero position. Observe the screen of the oscilloscope for a variation in the standard signal. If needed, turn the SIGNAL control all the way to the right. When a signal is detected, determine if it is really a resonance signal by adjusting the SWEEP control which should make the signal vary. Find the maximum value of this signal.

Re- Adjusting the Sweep Rate

Set the sweep rate of the oscilloscope to 10, to 5 then to 2 milliSeconds. Place the signal in the middle of the screen by adjusting the SYNCHRO control of the gaussmeter.

Optimizing the Position of the Probe

Slowly move the probe inside the gap and search for a position in which the signal reaches a maximum value. By using the SIGNAL control, adjust the height of the signal on the screen to 10 volts.

Adjust the SWEEP control to find a maximum signal value. Adjust this signal to measure 10 volts.

Locking the Signal

When the resonance signal is found and its strength is sufficient, the SIGNAL light should come on. Flip the MANU/AUTO switch down to AUTO. The display should list the value of the magnetic field. Now go on with Optimizing the Sweep Value

If the SIGNAL does not come on or the gaussmeter lost the signal in the AUTO position, flip the switch back to MANU. Turn the MANUAL ADJUSTMENT dial until the two resonance signals on the screen of the oscilloscope are superimposed on the top of each other. At this point, the value of the magnetic field is listed on the display.
