Modes

The gaussmeter can work in two modes:

READ ONLY

  • read magnetic field and tracking status

CONTROL MODE

  • read and change gaussmeter configuration
  • access storage and calculation functions
  • change mode

The next two paragraphs give you a description, how to read the magnetic field in the READ ONLY Mode. For information about the features of the CONTROL MODE, please consult the hardcopy of your manual.

Connection

1. To connect the gaussmeter to a computer you’ll need a NULL modem cable, a "free" RS232/serial port (a 25 to 9 Sub-D adapter, if your PC is only equipped with a 9 pole serial interface) and a termial program (minicom on Linux or HyperTerminal on Windows-systems).

2. Switch off the gaussmeter. Set the probe's filter type on position "0". Set the auto/manu switch to position "manu" and connect the cable to the serial port of your computer and the DB 25 interface at the backside of the gaussmeter.

3. Switch on the gaussmeter and start a terminal program on your computer using the following configuration parameters:

  • Bits per seconds: 9600
  • Data bits: 7
  • Parity: None
  • Stop bits: 1
  • Flow control: None

Protocol

The magnetic field can be read by sending the character "1". The gaussmeter answers by sending a chain of 10 ASCII characters with a delay between 0 and 0,45 seconds.

The first character received is not used, the second character indicates that a resonance peak is present (signal light on) during the field readout:

ASCII 63 locked
ASCII 62 searching
To be followed by eight characters representing the measuring value from right to left: first the "milliGauss" digits and last the "Tesla" digit.
